Here are some posts from the past year that either garnered a lot of comments or seem noteworthy for some other reason. I've picked just one from each month.

ReplyDeleteThanks for your blog Dennis, and all the best in 2011.
Dennis, thanks for all the good work you put into the blog this year. Your posts continue to be edifying and insightful, and you've attracted a community that makes the comments section just as good. I look forward to another year with Mangan's as my first read in the morning.
ReplyDeleteCheers and God bless!
Dennis, despite our profound disagreements over certain issues, let me also wish you a happy new year. I look forward to more spirited debates with you and your readers in the year to come.
ReplyDeleteDon't the Chinese celebrate the New Year in March or something?
ReplyDeleteThank you, Yan Shen.
ReplyDeleteAnd a prosperous New Year to you Dennis, and I hope by now you have diversified somewhat into silver, and can start to take profits.

I hereby perform the hapax googomena of "proposition inanation."
ReplyDeleteDennis, I really enjoy your blog. Have a Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThe "Rise and Fall" one begins ".....Britain was the world's greatest power, with vast imperial resources, sound money, and great self-confidence." But if you read about what Whitehall thought at the time, you'll read about the view that The Empire was a burden that would prove unaffordable, that Prussianised Germany was looking for excuses to pick a fight, that no solution to the Irish Question would gain the assent of both sorts of Irish, and so on. Here I'll add my won guess: much of the self-confidence was in the British way of life rather than any assumption of overwhelming military or political strength.
ReplyDeleteDo tell me if I'm wrong, but I'd guess that the USA's current position is rather different.
Specifically, if parts of DC realise that your Empire is a burden that is proving unaffordable, they're probably looking at a nation that doesn't realise that it's become Imperial or that its finances are entirely ruined.
You are faced with a prickly, nationalistic, xenophobic China, but perhaps one looking for weaknesses to probe rather than offering general belligerence.
You probably will be unable to find an answer the Hispanic immigration Question that would gain the assent of both sides of American party politics.
Much of the self-confidence that remains to you is not in the American way of life but rather in your assumption of overwhelming military strength.
Be that as it may, HNY.
Hey, and a Happy New Year to all of you!
ReplyDeleteSomething slightly depressing that struck me when I compiled this post was how few of the posts have any real lasting value. I guess blogging is a sort of subset of journalism, so that's to be expected, but still one has higher hopes. I can be satisfied that once in a while I come up with a corker, but at the cost of lots of dross in between.
Anon: I have indeed diversified into silver, with which I made a very good return this year. The double silver ETF, AGQ, is the number one performing ETF this year, out of 847, and I bought a boatload, starting in August, just before silver's 70% or so rise.

From an investing POV, it has been a very good year for me.
Much of the self-confidence that remains to you is not in the American way of life but rather in your assumption of overwhelming military strength.
For the most part, I agree.
I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year, Dennis.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great blog - one of the best on the web. Keep up the good work.
Martin B: Thank you very much! I have to say that you're one of the best commentators it's been my honor to host.
