The Elites Have Lost the Right to Rule

Thomas Friedman, establishment mouthpiece, has written one of the more arrogant and telling pieces ever to come from his august pen: Can't Keep a Bad Idea Down.
I confess, I find it dispiriting to read the polls and see candidates, mostly Republicans, leading in various midterm races while promoting many of the very same ideas that got us into this mess. Am I hearing right?

Let’s have more tax cuts, unlinked to any specific spending cuts and while we’re still fighting two wars — because that worked so well during the Bush years to make our economy strong and our deficit small. Let’s immediately cut government spending, instead of phasing cuts in gradually, while we’re still mired in a recession — because that worked so well in the Great Depression. Let’s roll back financial regulation — because we’ve learned from experience that Wall Street can police itself and average Americans will never have to bail it out.
Interesting that while he disparages anything that would limit the power of the government and allow people to keep more of their money away from government pickpockets, he seems so lacking in self-awareness that he doesn't realize that he's only arguing for the self-interests of himself and of his class, the elite. He's also reduced to lying: for instance, FDR massively increased government spending and thereby kept us in a depression for another eight years. While I certainly wouldn't argue for no financial regulation, we've had an abundance of it, and that is precisely what has gotten us into our current mess.

The fact is, the federal and state governments, i.e. Tom Friedman's kind of people, are precisely who has run this country into the ground. Yet he wants more and more of this, and thinks people will be stupid or blind enough not to see that he and his kind have ruined the country.
Let’s have no limits on corporate campaign spending so oil and coal companies can more easily and anonymously strip the Environmental Protection Agency of its powers to limit pollution in the air our kids breathe.
Translation: businesses that actually produce something that people need - as opposed to the parasites in government - should be disarmed so that they cannot fight back.
Let’s pay for more tax cuts by uncovering waste I can’t identify, fraud I haven’t found and abuse that I’ll get back to you on later.
Translation: my friends in the government can spend your money better than you can. If he can't identify waste, let me help: start by abolishing the Departments of Education and Energy, ending all foreign aid, and stopping those two ridiculous wars he's so enamored of.

The elite have lost the right to run the country. From the housing bubble to the subsequent bust, from the debasement of the dollar to the decline of manufacturing, from the massive bailouts of the TBTF banks to our impossible debt to the invasion from the south, the elites have been responsible for it all. They've run the nation into the ground, and then call for the hair of the dog.

I'll end with an excerpt from a piece by Mike Krieger, The Tipping Point Has Arrived:
I believe we have finally breached the tipping point in the socio-political landscape of the United States of America. There will be no going back from here. Everyone on all levels of society including the elites must make a choice. Will you stand for real reform and an end of the feudalistic rule of the oligarchs and their paid-off puppets that line the streets of Washington D.C., or will you keep your mouth shut and play the old and dying game in the context of a completely different cultural environment?

While many will disagree with what I am about to say, I believe the oligarchs and the Federal Reserve have already lost.

This will not be clear to the vast majority at this time because the powerful institutions that dominate and rob us will continue to fight for survival but the wind is already blowing in a different direction and cannot be reversed. The smart elites are starting to see this and are hedging their bets. The dumb or stubborn ones may want to start looking at countries with non-extradition treaties or start blowing the whistle on someone above them and fast. The window of opportunity to make the choice is closely quickly. “I was just following orders” will not cut it when the dollar collapses and Disneyland shuts down. There have not been any major arrests and people have seemingly gotten away with all their frauds and crimes. This too will change and 2011 will represent a change in trend in this regard. We have entered the terminal phase of this ponzi scheme economy and those responsible for its creation and its continued support at the expense of the vast majority of the populace will see their foul deeds rise to the surface.

  2. We've seen several opinion pieces recently touting the replacement of the WASPs as the ruling elite. Does the current predicament of the USA reflect poorly upon their newly minted replacements? When the WASPs were in control the USA emerged from WW2 as the greatest power in history. However, in the last 50 years the US has declined in relative terms against other leading nations.

To be sure, other nations were bound to rebuild from the war and increase their GDP. However, our new elites pushed for policies in the last 30 years that seemed to accelerate that decline such as free trade, open immigration, an economic focus on Wall Street and an interventionist foreign policy.

Would the USA be in this predicament if the WASPs were still the ruling elite?

  3. The work gets harder and harder, and the intellectual gymnastics more and more convoluted, to maintain legitimacy and control. One day, a single swift kick will cave in the whole rotten facade. I hope we get to live to see it happen.

  4. It is likely that at some point the *intellectual* elite will be replaced and demoted down to the level of skilled worker/ craftsmen/ servants; and the ruling elite will again consist of warriors and priests.

But any such deletion will not distinguish between intellectuals of the left and of the right: all the egg-heads - whether communist, liberal, neo- or paleo-conservative will go down the same plug-hole.

"Let’s immediately cut government spending, instead of phasing cuts in gradually, while we’re still mired in a recession..."

Actually, Friedman ought to read a little history now and then. Faced with a severe recession in 1920-21, when Warren Harding took office he immediately cut government spending by 40%. This resulted in a sharp rebound and set of the decade of the "Roaring 20s."

  8. Actually, Friedman ought to read a little history now and then.

Please don't be so demanding. It's absurd to think that a NY Times columnist should know any history. He's concerned about the future which, as we know, is an entirely different animal.

Prior to the appointment of "The Wise Latina", Laurence Tribe wrote Obama that Sonia Sotomayor is not that smart, and recommended Kagan instead. Gee, that's awkward.

  12. I hate to point this out, but America didn't become scientifically elite until after World War 2, in no small part due to the large influx of elite Jewish immigrants. The Jews were also instrumental in helping to develop the atomic bomb during that period. Not surprisingly, once the Germans kicked the Jews out of their school system, they fell from the top of the scientific ladder where they had been during the early 1900s. That can't be mere coincidence.

  14. I clicked on the Friedman link, but I stopped reading right here:

"Let’s restrict immigration, because, after all, we don’t live in a world where America’s most important competitive advantage is its ability to attract the world’s best brains."

Name one advocate of more restrictive immigration policies who argues for the exclusion of the most highly intelligent and educated aspiring immigrants.
Friedman's line of reasoning doesn't even rise to the level of sophistry, though it's apparently good enough for his enthusiasts at the NY Times. Even Friedman, dim though he obviously is, knows what he's up to. As I said, at this point, I just stopped reading. I'm exposed to enough bullshit on a daily basis as it is.

I think our economic and political system is grinding toward some end point, but I think, unfortunately, it will take a lot more suffering to get there, and whatever follows may make the current crisis look like La Belle Epoque by comparison.

Inevitably this always comes up when discussing the importance of a certain ethnic group. It is true that they contributed greatly to science and technology. But so did others like Edison, Bell, Tesla and von Braun. But it's hard to estimate how much their absence would have hurt. Japan did not have any Jews and yet they are likely the most technologically advanced nation on Earth. What we have learned the last 100 years is that those who invent or discover things aren't necessarily the only ones to benefit. The Japanese and Europeans seem to have adapted to new technology that they did not develop. It's not a stretch to believe the USA would not have done the same. The real drivers in America were the industrialists like Henry Ford, Boeing and Donald Douglas.

On the other hand, you can trace a lot of the movements of the political Left to 20th century Jewish immigrants. I think it is more likely that the absence of Jews would have affected our leftward tilt more than our scientific and technological abilities.

In regards to the atomic bomb, I wonder if that is something to be proud of? Listing the most destructive weapon in history as your main contribution doesn't seem to be a positive to me. In addition, the same guys who gave us the bomb gave it to the USSR.

  17. "He's also reduced to lying: for instance, FDR massively increased government spending and thereby kept us in a depression for another eight years."

Government spending kept us in a depression? The usual anti-FDR tack is to argue that his policies didn't end the recession -- World War II did. But if that's true, that's also an argument for government spending, since what drove the economy during World War II was massive, deficit-financed, government spending.

I suppose you could argue that had we followed Andrew Mellon's advice to liquidate everything, America would have bottomed out and then recovered faster. But considering that unemployment peaked at 25% during the Depression, how bad do you think it would have gotten under a liquidation scenario? Perhaps bad enough that the whole system would have collapsed before it had a chance to recover.

FDR was no saint or genius, but there are limits to the plausibility of today's rightist revisionism.

Just silly. Sure Jews like profitable ventures like any other group that can manage to get in on them. They do well for themselves and contribute to society, but its not like we weren't fine before.

  32. Personally I'm glad the Jews are inside the tent, but we should remember that WASPs and a some Catholic Europeans essentially created much of the modern world; Galileo,Darwin,Jenner, Davy, Newton, Rutherford, the Industrial Revolution crowd, Marconi, Maxwell, etc. The Jewish contribution was more recent, with a few exceptions (eg Copernicus). One might argue that Relativity was something that only an Einstein could have conjured up, but Quantum Physics was a joint effort.

The optimal combination for discovery is, I think, a combination of whites, Jews and East Asians, as they come on stream, and any one else opportunistically; but one other factor should be borne in mind, and that is the willingness of Jewish technology investors to take risks when others will not. This alone is a huge asset and distinguishes America from almost everywhere else (except Israel). Taking risks is where we fall down, and Jews in that sense certainly punch way above their weight, and ultimately benefit us all.

We'd get there on our own, it would just take much longer.

Read DeToqueville. Read Twain. Read any number of commentators of 19th Century antebellum (and at times postbellum) America.

It is assumed out of hand in these texts, when it is not vociferously proclaimed, that the free US states are the most free, the most prosperous, the most intellectually lively (if not profound) nation that ever existed.

The eastern Euros were late to the party since the Civil War's destructive work had already been done. (Yes, freeing slaves was a very good thing, but if you think that's all the Civil War was about then you are living a perpetual anal buffet). All states (not just the southern ones) were forced to rewrite their constitutions. And even they were talking about mythic levels of prosperity.

Jews taking credit for American prosperity is just monumentally misguided ethnic narcissism. Look to Washington, Franklin, Jackson, and Jefferson for the real benefactors of American prosperity. Look to Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon as primary benefactors of Israeli prosperity. And when Jews manage to put together a functional state without subsidy in the post-Babylonian world, I will gladly give them credit for it.

    Religion.

The relentless anti-white cultural warfare waged by Hollywood and later television, combined with the destruction of the education system by cultural marxists stealthing as "liberals" was slowed down in the US by church groups.

In particular, although based in the US, the anti-white agenda of Hollywood impacted Europe earlier because Europe was less innoculated by religion.

That's not to say that religion in itself is a good thing just that it partially vaccinates people from the poison brought to America by cultural marxists fleeing the Nazis - who came about partially as a reaction to marxism, both cultural and open.

It's similar to the way the cultural marxist onslaught was intended purely as an anti-white thing but the biggest casualties have been black families.

    Collateral damage.

You realize that the per capita GDP in the EU is significantly lower than that in the US right, either nominal or PPP adjusted. Think of that. The US with countless millions of unproductive blacks and Hispanics still handily beats out the EU in per capita GDP.

  49. The UberJew has a point; however, it is not the only potential explanation for the USA's traditionally being more wealthy than Europe.

Try capitalism for one. Europe is, unquestionably, more socialist than the US, and more like Canada.

Capitalism was not brought first to the US by the Jews, although they are good at it. It is also a fact that Jewish intellectuals have been prominent as advocates of socialism in the USA, and in encouraging mass immigration from South America and Mexico, which is unquestionably going to reduce per capita wealth creation in the US and may ultimately lead to its extinction as a great nation.

The UberJew should take a more balanced view, although I for one will not deny the financial and other achievements of Jewish Americans.

  50. I'm not denying that the Anglo-Germanic core of the US has done many good things, but I just question why we face such constant criticism without at least a recognition of what we bring to the table. True, the lefists encourage immigration from low IQ areas, and yet with so many blacks and hispanics, the US is still handily ahead of most of the Europe in PPP adjusted per capita income(even nominal for most of the larger European nations). I'd say that the good we bring to the table has thus far outweighed the bad so far.

And let's not forget that most of Southern and Eastern Europe is in shambles today.

I like the previous anon who mentioned the A-Bomb. The Jews played a significant role in the development of the A-Bomb(a task by the way which Germany utterly failed at). The A-Bomb helped to end the war against the Japanese prematurely, saving countless American lives.

And as I've said, even today we disproportionately run most of the productive sectors of American life. So once again, I urge people here to ask themselves. does the good outweigh the bad?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I just question why we face such constant criticism

Constant criticism? Criticism of Jews is all but outlawed in America. People lose their jobs for saying critical things about Jews. Criticism of Jews is largely confined to a few small blogs.

And as I've said, even today we disproportionately run most of the productive sectors of American life.

And as I've said, those "productive sectors" are a shambles. They may be enriching Jews, but they're impoverishing the rest of America. Outside of Jews, the rest of America would be better off if we outsourced Wall Street to Asia.

  52. The US with countless millions of unproductive blacks and Hispanics still handily beats out the EU in per capita GDP.

The EU has its own countless millions of unproductive people. In any case your claim was that Europe is not a "powerhouse". Having the largest economy in the world does in fact make you a "powerhouse". You overstated your case and are now trying to revise it.

Also, Germany's failure at making the bomb probably had something to do with the fact that they were being bombed constantly and their nation was cut off from easy access to resources. Thankfully, Hitler did not get the bomb, but I don't think you can chalk it up to any lack of ability on their part.

In regards to Japan, the Japanese were doomed the minute the Soviets joined the battle. Now some historians are beginning to believe that the success of the Soviet's Operation Storm in August 1945 contributed more to Japan's surrender than the A-bombs.

"The Soviet entry into the war played a much greater role than the atomic bombs in inducing Japan to surrender because it dashed any hope that Japan could terminate the war through Moscow's mediation," said Tsuyoshi Hasegawa, whose recently published "Racing the Enemy" examines the conclusion of the Pacific war and is based on recently declassified Soviet archives as well as U.S. and Japanese documents..

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think the good does outweigh the bad, but neither the good nor the bad have finished yet. Consequently, it is difficult to know whether the balance will always be favorable, although I hope it will be.

One thing should give you pause for thought; the Bomb unquestionably shortened WWII and saved tens if not hundreds of thousands of American lives. It also was substantially a Jewish contribution, pursued with the desperation of people who knew their own salvation depended on it.

But now, the Bomb is a threat to everyone, and most especially Israel.

And the 'open borders' philosophy has resulted in mass immigration into Europe of millions of people who do not have a great track record of philo-semitism.

So it must also be contemplated that great talent may not only solve spectacular problems, but also create them, and that achievements in the short term may paradoxically hurt not only your enemies but in the long run, yourselves.

Let's look at the historical record. At the outbreak of WWI, when Jews were numerous and well integrated in Germany but not in America, Germany (then the leading European power) had a per capita GDP about 33% lower than that in the US. So your much touted "Jewish edge" did not help Germany much, nor did the lack of it injure America.

America actually surpassed Great Britain in the per-capita/GDP sweepstakes in the late 19th century, becoming the wealthiest large country in the world. It somehow managed accomplish this without the so-called "Jewish edge".

The US already had "the edge handily over Western Europe" several generations before Jews immigrated to and rose to power in it.

In short, your "Jewish edge" seems to be non-existent. And like a disturbingly large number of Jews, you appear to be almost completely ignorant of all history which does not directly relate to your own people.

All the smarter Ashkenazis (that's who these "Jew" boosters are actually boosting, Ashkenazis, not Jews) live in America, while Israel (far more Ashkenazi than the USA, and nothin' but Jews and a small minority of others) is a relative backwater.

Ashkenazis follow Europeans wherever they go. As they're blaming us for the totality of Ashkenazi-European conflict ("persecution"), of course. Same way blacks do, even as they blame us for all their woes. It's clear they need us far more than we need them. It's clear we're better for them than they are for us. It's clear they know all of this, which explains a lot of the animus. It's clear we'd be fine without them, and without us they'd be...Israel.

Ashkenazis gnash their teeth constantly about the evil Europeans that persecute them, then follow them wherever they go; the Shoah didn't even slow them down.

  57. I'm sorry but it's absolutely true that European Americans today owe an enormous debt to Jewish Americans.

You can boast about achievements all day long, but if the net effect is the loss of civilization itself, then all of the achievements in the world didn't amount to a hill of beans. Jews have made enormous contributions in the empirical sciences and mathematics, but Jews have also provided us any number of insidious and stupid ideas in the social arena.

I can imagine the same being argued about Jews in apartheid South Africa, but given the important role played by Jewish leftists in that country's anti-apartheid movement, South African whites might now wish they had never admitted any Jews; that's regardless of the contributions made by South African Jews prior to helping usher in a return to the Dark Ages.

  58. Yes Severn, if you add up the GDPs of a bunch of countries, the total can be impressive. The total aggregate GDP of Africa is larger than that of the country of France.

So should I say that Africa is a powerhouse along with the likes of France, etc?

I'm not sure why you're so proud that the EU, which is an aggregate of a bunch of European nations has a higher total GDP than the US, which is one country. The population differential is something like 500 million to 300 million. The per capita GDP is a lot lower in the EU relative to the US

Also, there may be unproductive Europeans, but at least they have a higher average IQ than blacks and Hispanics. The fact that the Jewish edge can offset millions and millions of blacks and Hispanics is pretty impressive if you ask me.

And how often do WNs praise what we bring to the table?

Population density strikes me as far and away the salient difference. It's impossible to miss, unless you just aren't looking. It's like looking at a tapped-out mine surrounded by a crowded work camp, and then looking at a newly-started mine with only a few workers, scratching your head, and wondering, "duh, gee, why's the second mine making those guys rich?"

And there are leftwing goyim-a-plenty, and even more- actually an endless supply- of white "useful idiots", who are actively engaged in the destruction of the West.

It is profoundly wrong to blame our own weaknesses on the Jews or anyone except ourselves.

To fully understand the role of Jews in North America (they have less of a role in Europe, although this could be argued) one has to constantly remind oneself of what they constantly remind themselves of, which is the Holocaust, and their overwhelming fear it could happen again. IMHO, the Holocaust has re-inforced a tendency amongst influential Jewish thought-leaders to weaken the very people who have been, historically, their staunchest allies, ie North American WASPs, in a sense trying to fight the last war or prevent a re-occurrence of it. In so doing, they have incurred, and will increasingly incur costs to themselves, such as the destruction of Western Civilization.

Somebody mentioned South Africa. This country used to have a thriving, very important and incredibly constructive Jewish population. They almost all of them decamped quite quickly after the end of apartheid; they knew it was no longer safe for them or their assets.

Europe is now a long way down the same road to perdition, and this will NOT be good for Israel. The USA is following along, not far behind.

So what I am saying is that we actually ought to MUTUALLY appreciate what each of us brings to the table, which is a lot in both cases, and unless we work together it's game over for both of us.

The pattern of jewish behaviour for centuries has been to try and undermine the group cohesion of the host population because they see that as being good for the security of the jews - which it is in the short-term.

However there are only two ways that jewish strategy can end. Either the host population realises in time and expels the jews or the jews eventually cause a collapse.

No benefit can possibly outweigh having your nation deliberately rotted from within because a minority group sees that as making them safer.

  71. Some reasons I'm skeptical of the "America is the preeminent power because of Jewish-Americans" argument:

    1. American preeminence occurred simultaneously with the end of WWII. America had already defeated Germany by the time the great Jewish-American war contribution, the atomic bomb, was mobilized against Japan. Japan's fate was already sealed by that time, atomic bomb or not. (This preeminence was extended when the Soviets, the other victor of WWII, eventually self-destructed seemingly due to a backward economic system.)

(Severn noted a similar thing above about the wealth chronology problem, but TUJ seems to have ignored it.)

    2. There are many North-Western European countries with higher or comparable per capita GDPs to the U.S. From the IMF, in 2009 they included:

    Luxembourg
    Norway
    Switzerland
    Denmark
    Ireland
    Netherlands
    (U.S. is here)
    Austria
    Denmark
    Finland
    Belgium
    Sweden

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28nominal%29_per_capita

(say, depending on how one defines comparable - Germany is the next on the list, its ranking is probably significantly due to its absorbing Eastern Germany)

That's 11/17 major Western European countries. 11/14 if you remove the Southern Western European countries (Spain, Portugal, Italy).

    3. The high number of Hispanics in the U.S. is very recent, and seems to be at least partly responsible for the current economic havoc.

So, to argue that the U.S. is doing unexpectedly well, and can only be explained by the "Jewish edge" given all these Hispanics, is a little unfair, as the negative affects of Hispanic mass immigration are just starting to be felt.

    4. One can look at another country - Canada. It has the 4th largest Jewish population in the world (after Israel, the U.S., and France). Is the Jewish edge manifesting in Canada?

(Note: numbers from here http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/jewpop.html )

It doesn't seem that apparent. Compare it to Australia, another large land mass country with similar founding stock. Australia has about 2/3s Canada's population, but only about 1/4 its Jewish population - but Australia has a higher per capita GDP. (According to the standards I used above, they would be comparable.) So, if there's a big Jewish economic affect, it's difficult to see here.

In what way was it substantially a jewish contribution? Off hand, I can think of about a half dozen jews who worked on it or were involved in it's genesis - Meitner, Frisch, Oppenheimer, Bethe, Feynman, Szilard, Teller, Weisskopf. Any others of note? Bear in mind, that it was a vast project, that involved the solution of numerous problems, and the creation of large industrial enterprises - including among them, the creation of an entirely new industry, isotope separation. Most of the people involved in the making of the A-bomb were not jews. The notion that jews invented the A-bomb is a myth.

Precisely. For the purposes of argument, let's get past the question of the balance sheet and get right to the meat, as ATBOTL suggests; do you acknowledge our right to have for ourselves what Jews have for themselves in Israel? Because that's the thing about rights, they don't depend on someone else's assessment of whether you've been fair in tallying a ledger; Is Jewry's right to Israel dependent on my assessment of whether Jews have unfairly judged non-Jews?

Morally, however, the work was eagerly supported and paid for by white America, and there is no doubt the Nazis would have got one sooner or later.

    It had to be done.

But now it cannot be contained, and it is just a matter of time until the next one goes off. You know that, when a tuppeny-ha'penny

Yes, I recommend this public domain documentary about antisemitism and Jewish fears by an Israeli filmmaker. The movie is in English.

The way in which Israeli children are frightened into believing every non-Jew in the world is a violent antisemite, and some of the subjects' assessments of their community's collective behavior are stunning. Jews are probably disproportionately represented in physics, so there is some truth to what you say, however, it is telling that you can't offer many more names than I already mentioned. And of course, you did not mention Harry Gold, David Greenglass, and the Rosenbergs - who were certainly instrumental in building the Russian bomb.

Einstein, by the way, had nothing to do with designing or building the bomb. He put his signature beneath a letter that was drafted by Leo Szilard and Eugene Wigner, and given to FDR in order to alert him to the potential danger of Germany acquiring nuclear weapons. To say that Einstein had a material role in building the bomb because of mass energy equivalence - well, you might as well say that James Joule was instrumental in building the A-bomb because of his experiments demonstrating the conservation of energy in the 19th century. Or that Leibniz was, for formulating the concept of energy in the 17th century. Moreover there really was no one person whose contribution was so great that it could be called indispensible - there were enough talented people working on it, that it was going to be built one way or another.

"Morally, however, the work was eagerly supported and paid for by white America, and there is no doubt the Nazis would have got one sooner or later."

As a previous poster pointed out, work on the A-bomb was done under an unprecedented curtain of secrecy - nobody in the general populace knew about it. Also, the german bomb effort was pretty weak. They were simply stretched too thin (especially given the enormous amount of money and personnel they were devoting to the V-2, a useless weapon) to devote many resources (money, or people) to building a weapon that would almost certainly never be completed before war's end. By May 1945, they had just about finished a reactor - a step that the U.S. had knocked out in 1942.

  85. Look,it didn't build itself. It was a joint effort, but I think that had we been on our own, without the Jewish contribution, we may not have beaten the Germans to it. No-one could know for sure that the Germans would lose the war conventionally when the decisions were made in the early 1940's. In fact at that time it looked like they were unstoppable.

Sure the Manhatten Project was secret, but the general US population was not in the dark post-1945 and there was never any serious support in the US for disarmament during the Cold War.
Quite the opposite in fact, except for the students who were mainly fired up over Vietnam more than the Bomb.

Jewish physicists were deeply involved in the Bomb primarily because they feared existentially for themselves and their people if Hitler got there before we did. He effectively would have controlled the world, this is exactly what would have happened.

It is only with the wisdom of hindsight that we know that the Germans weren't that close. Who knew, in 1942, say, what Heisenberg et al could or could not pull off? The Germans succeeded at pretty much whatever else they tried, engineering-wise. I would say that people like Szilard were better positioned than anybody to know what the Germans might be able to do, and they were the most insistent that we build it
as soon as possible. This was sheer, unadulterated fear and they were completely right, given their information.

And Einstein did not try to stop the Bomb at the time. He knew it could be done, and he lent his considerable weight and prestige to validating the feasibility of it.

Otherwise why would Szilard have gone to him?

Proportionately the Germans spent 4x on the V-2 what the US spent on the Manhattan Project. Maybe they should have spent the money on more tanks and planes. But did they have the petrol available for them? And tanks and planes are useless without well-trained crews that eat up time and fuel in training. Maybe more artillery would have the best option.

By the end of the Battle of Kursk (Aug.43) it was obvious that the Germans couldn't win the war. Probably earlier than that- but I'm being generous. At that time the US could have abandoned the Manhattan Project and reached out to the eager Admiral Canaris (Chief of Military Intelligence and anti-Hitler since Poland ) to overthrow Hitler and bring an end to the war. If Canaris got caught there were many generals willing to take his place. But FDR was determined to destroy Germany and stay true to his mass-murdering Soviet pals.

Maybe Ashkenazis were the only way we could've developed the bomb by the time we did. Maybe not. George Koval was born in 1913 to Abraham and Ethel Koval in Sioux City, Iowa, which had a large Jewish community and a half-dozen synagogues. In 1932, during the Great Depression, his family emigrated to Birobidzhan, a Siberian city that Stalin promoted as a secular Jewish homeland.

A Spy’s Path: Iowa to A-Bomb to Kremlin Honor
    By WILLIAM J. BROAD
He had all-American cover: born in Iowa, college in Manhattan, Army buddies with whom he played baseball.
George Koval also had a secret. During World War II, he was a top Soviet spy, code named Delmar and trained by Stalin’s ruthless bureau of military intelligence.
Atomic spies are old stuff. But historians say Dr. Koval, who died in his 90s last year in Moscow and whose name is just coming to light publicly, was probably one of the most important spies of the 20th century.
On Nov. 2, the Kremlin startled Western scholars by announcing that President Vladimir V. Putin had posthumously given the highest Russian award to a Soviet agent who penetrated the Manhattan Project to build the atom bomb.
The announcement hailed Dr. Koval as “the only Soviet intelligence officer” to infiltrate the project’s secret plants, saying his work “helped speed up considerably the time it took for the Soviet Union to develop an atomic bomb of its own.”
Since then, historians, scientists, federal officials and old friends have raced to tell Dr. Koval’s story — the athlete, the guy everyone liked, the genius at technical studies. American intelligence agencies have known of his betrayal at least since the early 1950s, when investigators interviewed his fellow scientists and swore them to secrecy.
The spy’s success hinged on an unusual family history of migration from Russia to Iowa and back. That gave him a strong commitment to Communism, a relaxed familiarity with American mores and no foreign accent.
