Anti-White Racism of the Hostile Elite

NYT's Ross Douthat on the roots of white anxiety:
In March of 2000, Pat Buchanan came to speak at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics. Harvard being Harvard, the audience hissed and sneered and made wisecracks. Buchanan being Buchanan, he gave as good as he got. While the assembled Ivy Leaguers accused him of homophobia and racism and anti-Semitism, he accused Harvard — and by extension, the entire American elite — of discriminating against white Christians.

A decade later, the note of white grievance that Buchanan struck that night is part of the conservative melody. You can hear it when Glenn Beck accuses Barack Obama of racism, or when Rush Limbaugh casts liberal policies as an exercise in “reparations.” It was sounded last year during the backlash against Sonia Sotomayor’s suggestion that a “wise Latina” jurist might have advantages over a white male judge, and again last week when conservatives attacked the Justice Department for supposedly going easy on members of the New Black Panther Party accused of voter intimidation.

To liberals, these grievances seem at once noxious and ridiculous. (Is there any group with less to complain about, they often wonder, than white Christian Americans?) But to understand the country’s present polarization, it’s worth recognizing what Pat Buchanan got right.

Last year, two Princeton sociologists, Thomas Espenshade and Alexandria Walton Radford, published a book-length study of admissions and affirmative action at eight highly selective colleges and universities. Unsurprisingly, they found that the admissions process seemed to favor black and Hispanic applicants, while whites and Asians needed higher grades and SAT scores to get in. But what was striking, as Russell K. Nieli pointed out last week on the conservative Web site Minding the Campus, was which whites were most disadvantaged by the process: the downscale, the rural and the working-class.

This was particularly pronounced among the private colleges in the study. For minority applicants, the lower a family’s socioeconomic position, the more likely the student was to be admitted. For whites, though, it was the reverse. An upper-middle-class white applicant was three times more likely to be admitted than a lower-class white with similar qualifications.

This may be a money-saving tactic. In a footnote, Espenshade and Radford suggest that these institutions, conscious of their mandate to be multiethnic, may reserve their financial aid dollars “for students who will help them look good on their numbers of minority students,” leaving little room to admit financially strapped whites.

But cultural biases seem to be at work as well. Nieli highlights one of the study’s more remarkable findings: while most extracurricular activities increase your odds of admission to an elite school, holding a leadership role or winning awards in organizations like high school R.O.T.C., 4-H clubs and Future Farmers of America actually works against your chances. Consciously or unconsciously, the gatekeepers of elite education seem to incline against candidates who seem too stereotypically rural or right-wing or “Red America.”

This provides statistical confirmation for what alumni of highly selective universities already know. The most underrepresented groups on elite campuses often aren’t racial minorities; they’re working-class whites (and white Christians in particular) from conservative states and regions. Inevitably, the same underrepresentation persists in the elite professional ranks these campuses feed into: in law and philanthropy, finance and academia, the media and the arts.
What we have here is evidence of massive anti-white and/or anti-Christian discrimination being practiced by some of America's most prestigious and important institutions, which control entrance into the elite. All this is aided and abetted by the feds.

Let the lawsuits begin. Let Harvard, Yale, and the rest be bankrupted defending against or settling, or even better, losing those suits. Let the next administration, with a different attorney general than the black supremacist Holder prosecute university administrations everywhere.

Later in his column, Douthat says that this date fuels "racially tinged conspiracy theories" such as "that a Wall Street-Washington axis wants to flood the country with third world immigrants". I don't know where Douthat has been, but all the evidence points toward this conspiracy theory being right on the money. Because that's what's happening, and it's not because the American people want it.

Here it's worth noting a quote from Angelo Codevilla's recent piece on the ruling class:
Our ruling class's agenda is power for itself. While it stakes its claim through intellectual-moral pretense, it holds power by one of the oldest and most prosaic of means: patronage and promises thereof. Like left-wing parties always and everywhere, it is a "machine," that is, based on providing tangible rewards to its members. Such parties often provide rank-and-file activists with modest livelihoods and enhance mightily the upper levels' wealth. Because this is so, whatever else such parties might accomplish, they must feed the machine by transferring money or jobs or privileges -- civic as well as economic -- to the party's clients, directly or indirectly.

  1. A few weeks ago Steve Sailer posted an item regarding a study that showed that Jewish people are ethnically distinct from whites of European descent.

In reply I asked if this would result in a change to the quotas of Harvard to break out this ethnically distinct group from the (underrepresented) group of "white". An anonymous commenter (who cuts and pastes his replies to this site as well) replied:

"Steve, it is pretty well known that Harvard has policies that show preference for a gentile from the red states vs a jew from the blue states

This is pretty openly talked about at Harvard and other ivies as "seeking geographical diversity"

If a white from say Idaho or Montana has the same IQ and same test scores as a jewish person from the New York suburbs, the white person is much more likely to get in.

No serious observer of the ivy admission process has ever disputed this as far as I know"

I wonder where this commenter is today.

  2. Kevin MacDonald points out the obvious Jewish angle to this story
    http://www.alternativeright.com/main/blogs/untimely-observations/the-ivy-league-elite-and-the-chosen-elite/#disqus_thread

One disadvantage MacDonald doesn't mention is that poor whites are forced into schools full of aggressive illiterate blacks (and Mexicans) where you won't find a single Jew.

Schools such as the one described by this guy
    http://www.whitecivilrights.com/?p=3744

"There is a kind of child whose look can melt your heart: some working-class castaway, in and out of foster homes, often abused, who is nevertheless almost an angel. Your heart melts for these children, this refuse of the modern world."

  3. My understanding is that "whites" in this case includes Jews.

This then become important in understanding what is happening.

even correcting for IQ, Jews are massively overrepresented at Ivy League universities compared to Whites. In 1998, Jews represented around 25–33% of Harvard undergraduates compared to around 25% non-Jewish Whites. In 2000 the Jewish population was around 3% of the non-Hispanic White population. On the basis of IQ, the ratio of non-Jewish Whites to Jews should be around 7 to 1 (IQ >130) or 4.5 to 1 (IQ > 145). Instead, the ratio was at most 1 to 1. But even this may underestimate the gap because it's hard to believe that all Harvard students have at least an IQ of 130.

In other words, the whites displacing the lower-class whites with similar qualifications are largely Jewish whites.

  4. What is one to think of Douthat? On the one hand, someone who can write "conservatives attacked the Justice Department for supposedly going easy on members of the New Black Panther Party" (emphasis mine) has thrown away his credibility with anyone to the right of Mao. On the other hand, his columns often read (as this one does) as if they are written by starting from a Steve Sailer or Alt Right column and asking "How can I re-write this so that the NYT will publish it while retaining as much of the substantive content as possible"

If the minds of the elite are to be changed, maybe Douthat is doing God's work here.

  5. Douthat is saying: "Certain white Americans are angry. Could you please bribe them with admissions to universities (buying the possible intellectual elite members of opposition) so that we can go on with our liberalism."

I would decline that offer (a Finnish view).

  6. We’re told that discrimination based on colour, religion or sexual persuasion is a big no-no, but the fact of the matter is that it's widely accepted in todays society. It’s widespread and it's condoned by the elites.

The big no-no of course is the discrimination that punishes ‘ethnic minorities'. It's not the discrimination that gives advantages and privileges to these minorities and punishes the white majority.

I wrote a post yesterday on my own blog were I’ve outlined some of the ‘positive discrimination’ bestowed upon the ‘ethnic minorities in the west today. And that list is quite extensive.

  8. Dennis again intoduces a critically important issue related to America's decline into the cesspool of diversity culture. That elite universities discriminate against poorer whites so systematically is criminal. For liberals this is "justice." Anon is right about Jews having overrepresentation but they are fully qualified and usually wealthy. If admissions departments were not biased in favor of lesser achievers like blacks and Hispanics, we would have no gripe about Jews.

Scott refers to a long essay on teaching black children that is a classic. This intelligent white teacher got a good taste of the vast problems of converting sows' ears into silk purses. His detailed description of his travails are the best I have ever read. However, the millions spent attempting to create equality has at least created a black elite that occupies high-rise offices and embody the structural features of the new power-elite. Oprah, you must recall, is a modern goddess of wisdom for blacks and whites
operating a vast empire herself.Much of it is built upon the fluff of AA, but few whites have the courage to challenge this corrupt system openly. Some blacks are fully deserving of their success but many are "empty black suits" impersonating competence that was real in a mostly white power structure.

Ross Douthat charges into the gap, so to speak, and identifies a real source of white pessimism and alienation. Yet he is a milquetoast pseudo-conservative writing circuitously enough to pacify his NYT superiors. His conservativusm oozes PC compromise.

Before 1960 I taught an honors biology class at Montclair High in New Jersey. One class of 30 produced four Harvard freshmen later on. Almost all went to the "Ivys." This group was entirely white and mostly rich. Harvard loved such students in those days and had almost no blacks or Hispanics for good reason. While Iam glad that whites still fill most vacancies, the degradation of real meritocracy by "diversity allotments" is pathetic. Colleges and universities are today playing a game of corruption mandated by the liberal power elite. Lawsuits reaching the Supreme Court will be decided by 5-4 margins and we must hope that poor whites gain a measure of justice.

  9. One fundamental reason of the discrimination of whites (and east asians) from the working class and the red states is simple:
the academia elite find them threatening their positions where latinos and blacks are not a threat.

The description of what happen is revealing:
they prefer poorer blacks/latinos (most primed to fail) over whites/asians with money. They prefer lower IQ blacks against higher IQ whites from a different state/ social strata/ religious affiliation.

The solution is always the same:
reduce the government power and size, so these will have less power to hold against the working people.

  10. Can we get on with creating our own elite already? What would be better? 10% more smart conservatives being admitted to Harvard to be harassed and brainwashed for four years by the other 90%, or starting our own Harvard in the Midwest somewhere where all the conservative kids could congregate?

We are not going to right this sinking ship. The best we can do is be prepared with our own parallel elite and institutions.

  11. Anon is right about Jews having overrepresentation but they are fully qualified and usually wealthy.

They are usually wealthy but not always "fully qualified". Jews are greatly over-represented even after taking into account the average Jewish IQ.

Based solely on IQ, the ratio of non-Jewish whites to Jews in the top schools should be about 7 - 1. Instead it's 1 - 1.

To say the same thing in different words, many of the Jews in the Ivies are getting there even though they are not that smart.

It's just as easy for a dumb but rich Jew to get into Yale as it is a dumb but rich WASP.

The most egregious example of pay-for-Crimson - play is that of Jared Kushner , now the youthful owner of The New York Observer. While Jared was applying to colleges, his dad, New Jersey billionaire developer Charles Kushner , pledged $2.5 million to Harvard, to be paid in installments. (Kushner pere pleaded guilty to tax evasion and other counts in 2004 and recently completed a prison sentence.) An official at Kushner's high school told Golden: ``There was no way anybody in . . . the school thought he would on the merits get into Harvard. His GPA did not warrant it, his SAT scores did not warrant it. We thought, for sure, there was no way this was going to happen." Kushner graduated from Harvard in 2003.

  14. I read the column. And what struck me was this passage:

    This breeds paranoia, ...

So in preceding paragraphs he basically admits -- i.e. cites studies that provide "statistical confirmation" -- that Whites, especially Whites from lower socioeconomic strata (aren't we all headed there?) in 'Red States', have something to be concerned about. And then he labels that concern "paranoia".

That's not my definition of paranoia.

  15. For many on the Left, racism means white supremacy. Discriminating against whites is fighting white supremacy and thus fighting racism. By definition, helping non-whites is also fighting racism. Anything that supports white supremacy is racist and anything that hinders white supremacy is anti-racist. Reducing the numbers, power, and status of white Americans hinders white supremacy. The Left considers this a moral obligation.

  16. I think the best solution to this and many other related troubles is through state nullification and tax payer revolts. Harvard and other elite institutions are largely funded through the federal government. Most of the research that goes on in these universities comes via federal agencies such as NSF, DOE, and NIH. Taking control of a state politically is a far less daunting task then taking over the federal government. If the state refuses to hand over money to the federal government other states will invariably follow suit (i.e. Arizona and immigration enforcement). If I remember right Harvard, Princeton and the like refused to let military recruiters and ROTC on to their campuses. When a few congressmen threatened to pull their federal funding they quickly folded, and allowed military recruiters on to their campuses. It's time to show these clowns where the real power lies. And its not in Cambridge or New Haven.

Unfortunately, the federal government gets its money from individual citizens through the income tax, rather than from the states. And individual citizens are a lot easier to push around.

If states were willing to shield their citizens from federal prosecution, they could wield some influence. Arizona, for example, could tell the feds; "Hey, you don't want us enforcing federal laws concerning immigration? Fine, we won't enforce any federal law. Don't want to pay federal income tax? Come to Arizona. We don't mind, and we will not permit federal authorities to act in our jurisdiction."

  26. One thing to point out...It's incorrect to compare the percentage of Jews at elite universities with their proportion amongst the general population at large, in order to argue that they're somehow being overly favored for admissions to these elite schools. The correct comparison should be made between the percentage of Jews at elite universities and the percentage of Jews amongst the applicant pool to these universities. After all, a school can't accept someone doesn't apply. :) In fact, we already know from anecdotal evidence that certain groups, like East Asians or South Asians or Jews are already disproportionately represented amongst the applicant pool to many elite schools. Though this in and of itself is an interesting phenomenon to explore, one should still remember to compare the distribution of groups amongst the study body of elite schools to the corresponding distribution of these groups amongst the initial applicant pool.

  27. Kurt has framed the issue of racism very well and his summary makes our mission precarious and complex. Any defense of "whiteness" can be and will be construed as racism by most petulent and messianic liberals.White supremacism is an extremist movement of biker/KKK types who are far removed from most people blogging at Half-Sigma, OneSTDV, Mangans, etc.

We are up against an elite power structure that now extends NAMS power across a whole range of political and social operations. They see "racism" as white supremacism everywhere. Nuances of meaning are lost on them. In a normal society the scientific basis of HBD would be honored and respected, but in our racially troubled society a vast power struggle has erupted that almost quietly replaces whites with deficient but self-confident, aggressive NAMS. Whites must play a defensive game as the Obama machine leads the pervasive effort to re-align the entire society to suit liberal myths. The unfair treatment of whites is becoming so truculent that even people like Douthat feel the urge to politely complain. We must fight back to restore our fair meritocracy which, while never perfect, allowed deserving middle-class folks to reach lofty academic goals in a society that never apologized for failure. Our current corrupt system of "compensation" must go.

  33. Dennis, that's a terrible argument. When certain groups are already vastly over-represented amongst the applicant pool relative to their proportion amongst the general population at large, it's not unexpected that that final distribution of matriculated students would also yield a vast over-representation of these groups relative to their proportion amongst the general population at large.

Part of the argument offered here has been to point out how Jews and Asians make up only a tiny fraction of the general population, but combined are upwards of 50% of the student body at elite schools. And it's suggested that even given the higher IQs of these two groups on average relative to gentile whites, they're still somehow overly represented at elite universities, because whites comprise a much large percentage of the general population at large. However, this reasoning is utterly fallacious, because a school can only accept people who bother applying in the first place. Thus, you need to compare the composition of the applicant pool to the composition of the student body in order to more adequately assess degree of over-representation.

You're right. A school isn't forced to accept more Asians or Jews merely because more Asians and Jews apply. But let's contemplate a hypothetical situation here. Imagine that a school imposes a strict meritocracy in terms of selecting for admissions. It's applicant pool is say 30% Asian, 25% Jewish, and 45% gentile white. Assume that all 3 groups are equally qualified on average. You'd then expect that the final study body might more or less reflect this distribution of applicants, and so it would be in some sense a fair process. But clearly, Asians and Jews in real life make up far less than 55% of the general population. If you compare the distribution of matriculated students to the distribution of these groups amongst the general population, you could in fact draw a faulty conclusion regarding whether or not certain groups are unfairly being favored in the admissions process.

    ReplyDelete
  34. In other words Dennis, if Asians and Jews are already vastly over-represented amongst the applicant pool relative to their percentages amongst the general population at large, then it's far more likely that a strictly meritocratic admissions system would yield the same degree of over-representation for Asians and Jews amongst the final student body. This would be true even if on average Asians and Jews had the same IQ as gentile whites. Imagine that Asians, Jews, and gentiles whites all had the exact same average IQ, hypothetically speaking. But for some reason, Asians and Jews were disproportionately represented in the initial applicant pool, say in a ratio of 30% Asian, 25% Jewish, and 45% gentile white. Then one might easily expect a purely meritocratic admissions system to yield a similar distribution for the final student body. Thus, in our hypothetical scenario, it would be utterly unfair to blame the admissions process for favoring Asians and Jews relative to gentile whites. The real issue here would be the fact that those two groups are already over-represented amongst applicants to begin with. And this fact isn't necessarily anyone's fault.

In that case, I'd wonder why qualified Asians and Jews are applying at a vastly greater rate than are equally qualified whites. I'd know that this is happening because the relative sizes of the population groups in question, along with their respective IQ's, make it a mathematical certainty.

  38. Let's keep the big picture in view. The purpose of this exercise is the creation of a position for the purpose of political argument. What is the palecon argument here? For years, the Left has taught, literally, that elite institutions were the product of their Christian, Northern European leadership, and such institutions operated so as to maintain the integrity of their host societies. That's putting their position nicely, of course.

Now that the Ivys and others are lead by a coalition of non-Christians and non-European minorities, shouldn't we argue that the Leftist deconstruction still applies? Accordingly, as we would expect, elite institutions are now hostile to the very mention of a Christian society with Northern European origins, much less supportive of such. As proof, consider the difficulty that ordinary Americans of traditional racial stock have in obtaining admission.

Once the debate has been reduced to a matter of tribal ascendancy, paleos get to take credit for centuries of spectacular institutional success, and the Elena Kagans of this world will have to argue that their cohort will do just as well if not better, which flies in the face of the historical record and ordinary observation.

  39. kritisk, I like how you ended that blog post. I'm confused though since I recall you found discrimination to be evil.

Anyway, my take on it is that both discrimination and racism(in the liberal sense of the word, in which everything is racism) are ok. Neither harms me or my group and actually is in our interest to be both. Actually, even the prejudiced hate, which real racism is isn't as harmful as non-discrimination is, even though it's quite pathetic. Any sane group that is willing to survive does both and us not surviving is a consequence of us not doing our job. Funny enough, if you replace the universal worldview of things, you can't really be racist since racism is a thing inside the universal egalitarian paradigm.

ASDF, I agree. The most important thing is that white people should create a new moral authority based on an ethnocentric group mythology. And then different institutions to replace the current ones.

Kurt, great summation. The only fault is that you didn't mention that white people existing is white supremacy too.

Martin B, despite us not getting along on certain things, I give credit where credit is due and your idea about states not enforcing federal legislation and shielding its citizens from it is a GREAT idea.

Cornelius, the first and foremost thing to do is get an ethnocentric meritocracy. Sure, outsiders will be received but on our own terms. The purpose of schools from my perspective is that they should work for us and educate the leaders we will have, not do some economic meritocratic thing. Sure, the admission will be meritocratic, but I don't see why Jews should go over WASPs, even if they're better. Unless they're better by a lot or irreplaceable, then yes, but otherwise no.

Anyway, why should funds raised from white taxpayers go to educate any nonwhite?

Steiner, that's an interesting way of putting it.
